Delaware Sub Shop – Anderson Mill

Although this little sub shop offers to deliver, it would be worth the drive to hit up jersey mikes or jimmy john’s instead. I’m all for promoting the little guy, but only if the little guy is worth it. This sub shop is not worth it. I tasted the chicken philly cheesesteak, without the cheese. I’m just not a big cheese fan, especially when eating at a restaurant. I was told that the selling point of the establishment was the peppers, but they were strangely missing on my sandwich. I felt as though the onions and mushrooms were a bit too greasy, even for a cheesesteak. Also there is a difference between sautéed and burnt. My onions were more the latter and less the former, leaving much to be desired. Lettuce and tomatoes also cost an additional quarter. Granted, its a quarter, but its also the principle. Who eats a sandwich without lettuce and tomato? My husband ordered one of their cold sandwiches, which was an interesting sight. I need to start taking pictures. The meat and veggies were tightly wrapped, and then stuffed into the sandwich bread. As for the bread itself…. I personally believe that the bread is what makes a sandwich place. Average bread, average place. This bread was similar to the hard “ciabatta bread” they used to serve at Washington University in St. Louis: hard to the point it did not chew well and was more likely to damaged the rough of your mouth than please the palate. Imagine eating giant thick crackers (matzo crackers only a 1/2 inch thick). Not too pleasing nor worth the effort. Finally, the interior of the restaurant was a bit run down and the employees seemed distracted. All in all, save your money and hit up jersey mikes or jimmy johns instead. You’ll be happy you did.

cons: disorganized, unsatisfying food taste, poor lighting, food that does not lend itself to business lunches… and of course over priced food (but considering it is a museum cafe, i almost feel as though this point does not need to be expressed)

pros: convenient location

yeah, I could do without that one again. If you have to eat near the state capitol, go to scholtz’s garden or hell, even wendy’s, instead.

austins iron works = best green beans and 2nd best bbq in austin. atmosphere was cool (totally digged the wood stove on a cold evening) and the slanted floor was… interesting.

Umm, is it something about me or something wrong with this town, but there seems to be some serious issues with the take out in my area lately. I’ve had food be wrong after the server asked me to my face what I wanted, forgotten silverware, forgotten food, food not matching the ticket (who confuses hot & sour with wonton?) and my favorite: me standing there looking at my food getting cold while the woman working to go was busy texting. yup, its just that good.

Although the food was good, I admit I would be hard pressed to find a reason to recommend this place if you were not already in the area.

Service: The service was rumored to be lackluster, but I personally found them to be attentive, for college students on a Saturday afternoon. Once it was realized that we seemed to be a thirsty table, water came more frequently to our table. I fail to understand, however, why everyone was not offered a straw initially (but this is a minor complaint).

Atmosphere: C-. Seriously. The interior was like a bad, run down shack. The lighting was good, but the seats were tired (I felt the people behind me move, and they weren’t even the super rowdy/fidgety type). Some restaurants can pull of the slightly run down feel, to a degree that it actually enhances the experience. Magnolia is NOT one of such establishments.

The food: The mud appetizer dip was the best part of the actual meal, although it honestly would be difficult to mess up nacho sauce, pico de gallo and black beans all served in one bowl. I found the salsa to be slightly salty. The pineapple and sandwich/burger garnish were fresh, but unless you are madly in love with the lettuce and tomato on your hamburger, this is not a make or break deal. The eggs were cooked to specification, although a bit greasy. The burger was juicy and huge. The home fries were decent, although a bit greasy.

Overall: Although the review sounds negative, I did not loathe my experience. I just wouldn’t say that it was a MUST VISIT place.

abel’s on the lake

I’ll keep this brief:

Atmosphere: Truly depends on where the visitor sits. Being it brunch time on a bright weekend, the party opted to sit outside. The view was honestly less than stellar (who really wants to stare at murky water while they are eating their meal) unless one’s eyes were glued at the TV’s. The interior was elegant, and were a better reflection of the pricy meals.

Service: The waitress was quite attentive, but not overly “pesky.” The omelet maker was also attentive to details.

Food: The food was ok, but not NEARLY worth the price. The fruit was fresh, but the selection for the buffet was quite lacking. I hate to say it, but Ryan’s steakhouse (yes, the place that doubles as a comedy defensive driving location) has a better selection. Other than the fruit, nothing was genuinely memorable (including previously mentioned custom ordered omelets)

Overall, I would not recommend abel’s on the lake. I’m glad I went with the group that I did, but I don’t think I will be recommending it to anyone.

Quick overview: My experience at Serrano’s was AMAZING, and I totally plan on going back! Details are below!

Restaurant appearance: Perfectly clean. The set up made it a little awkward to get to the table, but I LOVE walking into a mexican/tex mex establishment and seeing the tortilla maker. I know, its cheesy, but its nice to know that they aren’t just buying the same shit I do to make tacos at home! The overall atmosphere was welcoming, and relaxing. The bar was put in such a place that it could accommodate several medium sized parties, without disrupting other guests nor impede the flow of traffic.

Other Customers: With the exception of the rude table right behind me, the other customers appeared to be the average Anderson Mill crowd: nice families, quietly talking and overall friendly.

Service: The service was prompt and courteous. Water glasses never dipped below the “1/2″ rule (as in the glasses should never be less than 1/2 full). My order, which I’ve been told can be quite specific at times, was perfect. The food was served quickly, and the table’s overall satisfaction appeared to be of genuine concern. I also would like to applaud the waiter for handling the previously mentioned rude table with grace. The only problem was the lack of plates, for both the chips and the fajitas. This, however, can be forgiven.

Food: Even though I have been lavishing compliments on the establishment, the food was the best part. You can usually tell the quality of a mexican/tex mex restaurant by the quality of the salsa they serve with the chips. The “traditional” red salsa was thick, with chunks of onion and tomato, and had a medium kick to it. The chips were a perfect thickness, that they held the salsa without requiring a jackhammer to consume. I ordered the chicken tortilla soup and house salad with citrus vinaigrette. The soup was flavorful, with an adequate ratio of chicken, vegetables and tortilla strips. My only suggestion would be to use a deeper bowl, as the shallowness of the one I had made some of the larger spices tend to cling to one side. The salad was once again amazing (what is it about this town and fresh lettuce? Fantastic!) and would highly recommend the vinaigrette as it was tangy yet sweet. My husband ordered the combination fajitas dinner, which was great minus the lack of bell peppers. The beef was much better than the chicken, which was quite a feat considering how great the chicken alone was. The flour tortillas were pleasantly toasted, with the bit of flour and warmth that leaves you happy and content. The rice was nothing exceptional, although I must admit I am looking forward to having of the leftovers as lunch tomorrow. The refried beans were appropriately cooked, and tasted great when added to the tortilla (beans + tortilla = food of the gods). I’ve noticed an overall tendency to over cook refried beans, making them dry and pasty. Serranos definitely once again did not fall victim to the trend.

Overall impression: I absolutely LOVED my experience and will be visiting once again! Next time I plan on getting one of their marinated chicken meals, and the flour tortillas (and highly recommend you do the same!)
